While living in the U.S., I have felt a big difference in the medical system between Korea and the United States. In South Korea, most sick people can go the hospital without any concern of money, but Americans do not. With regard to this situation, Indy Korea opened free medical consultation and health fair for the Korean community. My role in the event was making video content, and I also did an in-depth reporting of the event for the magazine.

The event was held in the building of Indy Korea on June 19, and about 350 people, who were Koreans and local residents, visited the event. Five medical doctors, three general doctors, a pediatrician, and a dentist, participated in the medical event. The participants were not only counseled from medical doctors, but also they got health information and checked their physical conditions though the health fair. All the activities in the event were held for free.

The most popular department of event was the dental clinic. Dr. Sung Kong, who works in Bright Smile Dental Care in Fishers, had cared for many participants without a break time. According to him, he was really happy to help Koreans in needed of tooth-treatment as another Korean. In addition, many participants of the event attended a health seminar in the fair and they asked general health advice, regarding topics like cancer.

Johnathon Yun, the founder of Indy Korea, emphasized that Indy Korea prepared the event for the Korean community and local residents because people in economic difficulties were not able to go to hospital when they felt a little symptom. According to Johnathon Yun, “the America has different medical system from South Korea. When people go to hospital, generally they should pay a lot of money. I am so glad because many people visited here than I expected. Because many people liked this event, I would make the other health event like this later for Korean Communities.”
